Once there was an old man who often said that he never went to bed without saying the prayer his mother had taught him as a little boy. He was pleased with himself, because he thought his prayer pleased God.
One Sunday, he went to Sunday School. The teacher asked what praying meant. One little boy answered, “It’s begging from God.”
The old man was startled. He had never thought about prayer in that way before! He kept thinking about the little boy’s answer and the Holy Spirit convicted the old man. When he got home, he fell on his knees, but this time he did not say the prayer his mother had taught him. With tears rolling down his cheeks, he confessed that he had never truly prayed and begged forgiveness for Christ’s sake.
Do you think the Lord forgave him? Yes.
After that, the old man would tell people, “I am the old man who said his prayers for seventy years, and never truly prayed until the Lord taught him how!”
Question: For what did the old man beg God in Jesus’ name?
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:5-15.
